| Burgundy Burgundy is synonymous with fabulous wines and mouth-watering cuisine throughout the world. The whites are made from Chardonnay but no two are the same. The silky reds of Burgundy are made almost entirely from Pinot Noir and are recognised as the finest expression of the grape in the world. The region of Burgundy is in the east of France in the slopes and valleys to the west of the river Saone. The most famous wines here are made from the Pinot Noir grape (reds), and Chardonnay (whites). Small amounts of rosé and sparkling wine -Cremant de Bourgogne - are also made. It has the highest number of AOCs of any wine region in France, and is often seen as the most terrior conscious. There is considerable diversity in Burgundy wines owing to the fact that from north to south it is a long region. The wines from Chablis, in the north of the region are dry, crisp and flinty, those from the Cote d'Or, or the Cotes de Beaune in the south are rich and full. Burgundian wines are elegant, of great finesse, and many will age for years. |
